Durban is South Africa’s third biggest city and it’s at the sea with a busy harbour (actually the busiest in the whole of Africa)! The beaches have lovely soft sand which gently flows through your toes and the Indian Ocean is warm – the brave and bold can even swim in winter. According to the Lonely Planet, Durban is one of the top family beach holiday destinations in the world!

In summer the weather is hot and humid with afternoon & evening subtropical rain showers cooling everything down.

From March/April through to June/July the weather is especially great for holidaymakers, because it’s not that hot and sticky anymore, and it usually doesn’t rain much.

Durban offers plenty of things to do, many of which are related to the outdoors with the emphasis on fun, sun, sea and sand. Swimming, surfing, sailing, canoeing and cycling are popular and when the weather is great (which happens a lot in Durban), you feel your holiday will never end.

Along the beaches, you are often lucky to see dolphins swimming by and from April to November, whales may be spotted as they travel to the waters of Mozambique further on the East Coast.

The city has a multi-cultural buzz: Durbanites with Zulu, Indian, English & European roots give the city its special energy. Visitors (not for the very young palates though) should try the hot, spicy curries and the famous bunny chow. Colourful rikshas on the beachfront are also unique to Durban and you can have a different kind of sightseeing experience on this funky transport.

Durban has many lush gardens, parks, reserves and world-class theme parks. There are animal farms and crocodile farms, and on weekends you can explore the scenic 1000 Hills hinterland on trains from years gone by.

Over weekends, you can browse and hang out at different flea markets. The city offers entertainment and festivals throughout the year, including the stylish Durban July horserace and a number of Beach Festivals.

You are also spoilt for choice with different museums packed with interesting things to discover. Look around the city for its diverse building styles with colonial & Art Deco buildings, Indian temples & mosques - a combination of old & new, Western & Eastern architecture.

The spunky Sharks have their home at ABSA Kings Park Stadium and Durban families are passionate rugger fans. The brand-new 2010 Moses Mabhida Stadium (work in progress) is Durban’s newest showpiece.

Durban has a treasure trove of things for you to do – always in or along the beautiful blue sea - and usually under a smiley sun!
