Overview: Mitchell Park offers spacious shady lawns, landscaped gardens and a playground with jungle gyms, swings and slides. Durbanites enjoy this Park with its spectacular, colourful flower beds, which are redesigned and replanted every season. In 1928, the Maharajah of Mysore presented the City Council with Nellie, an Indian elephant, who resided in the Mini Zoo and thrilled visitors with tricks which included blowing on a mouth organ and cracking coconuts with her feet. Today the Mini Zoo delights with aviaries of exotic birds, ducks, raccoons, wallabies, peacocks, small buck, monkeys, tortoises and even crocodiles. If you’re lucky you may even spot the elusive bushbabies. Admiral, the ancient tortoise, who arrived at Mitchell Park in 1915, then about six or seven years old is a popular resident of Mitchell Park’s Mini Zoo.
